Charles Floyd

I am a designer and illustrator with a love of learning and life-long interests in science, technology and art. I have worked as a designer, illustrator, professor and journalist, with a consistent emphasis on clear communication and problem solving. After obtaining undergraduate degrees in fine arts and biology, and a masters in industrial design, I worked within a variety of industries on a wide range of projects developing products, engaging in design studies, participating in marketing and communications programs and providing illustrations for commercial and educational endeavors. As an Industrial Designer, I have worked on the design of industrial equipment, electronic products, hand tools, and medical equipment. I participated in the design and layout of manufacturing facilities. While working for Design Edge in Houston, we worked with NASA to develop stowage locker designs for the space station and contributed to design studies for a "space life boat" for the station. I was also the lead designer for a hospital bed re-designed for the home market. As owner of a small communications firm with my wife Cynthia, a graphic designer, we developed marketing programs and provided graphic design and illustration services for a variety of businesses in the High Tech sector in North Carolina. A notable project was a book we helped produce for the How Stuff Works website. Cynthia managed the project and designed the layout for the 160 page book, while I researched and generated over 140 hand drawn illustrations on diverse topics ranging from flight of the Concorde to how radio controlled toy trucks work. All over a four month period. Pretty brutal, but also quite fun. As an art director at National Geographic Magazine, I focused on science and technology stories covering energy, medicine, aerospace, astronomy, paleontology, archeology, anthropology and biology. Working in story teams composed of artists, researchers, editors, writers and consultants, we labored to present engaging and cogent visual narratives to readers intended to enhance their understanding of science and the world.
