Joyce Kitchell

Joyce Kitchell has been painting her favorite things -- still life with lace, fruit, flowers, people and animals -- since devoting herself to illustration in the '70s. Her watercolors have graced packaging and advertising, calendars and book covers, catalogs and publications for clients as diverse as Disney and Pepsi, Seiko and Nabisco, Kraft Foods, Knotts' Berry Farm, Hewlett Packard, Gillette, Pfizer, Harlequin Books and LL Bean. Joyce's paintings are especially memorable for their unique ability to make real things tight and lifelike, yet loose and spontaneous. It's something she calls "reality with romance." She also exhibits regionally and nationally, and recently had a solo exhibit in southern California. Since graduating from San Diego State University, Joyce has worked as a graphic designer and illustrator. Her work has appeared in Illustration Annuals of the Society of Illustrators New York, Communication Arts Illustration Annuals, and Print's Regional Design Annuals. Articles about Joyce and her work have been featured in Communication Arts magazine and American Artist magazine. She is a member of the Illustrator's Partnership, Society of Illustrators New York and San Diego. Joyce lives and paints in San Diego (where her studio usually has a work in progress) with her husband Harry MacDonald, her greyhounds, Blue and Khianti, and her cats, Jenny and Ignatz.
