Cynthia Von Buhler
Cynthia von Buhler is an internationally exhibiting visual artist, illustrator, and author living in New York City. In addition to numerous group national and international exhibits she has held solo exhibits in New York City, Boston, and Milan.
Von Buhler's work is in the collection of The University of Toronto, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Howard Stern, Jann Wenner, and hundreds of personal collections all over the world.
Von Buhler and her work have been featured as the cover stories of the following publications: Communication Arts, Step by Step Graphics, The Boston Globe, The Boston Phoenix, The Improper Bostonian, LA's Entertainment Today, and many others. Articles, interviews, and reviews have also been featured in The New York Times, Time Out, New York Arts, ID Design Annual, Publisher's Weekly, Vogue, The Boston Globe, The Boston Phoenix, Alternative Press, Magnet, How, Print Design Annual, Salon.com, and Art New England. Von Buhler was interviewed and profiled in "Mary Magdalen: An Intimate Portrait" on television's Lifetime Network. In addition, a painting of hers which was created for The New Yorker was featured in the show's introduction graphics. Recently Von Buhler was interviewed about her art for Channel 5 News Boston (an ABC affiliate) and was interviewed by Italian television about her studio space, CVB Space, on the International Channel Worldwide.
In May 2001, Egyptian-style paintings Von Buhler created for The History Channel appeared in National Geographic, Newsweek, Discover, The New York Times, and many other national publications, on buses in NYC and LA, and on a mammoth wallscape running all the way down Madison Avenue.
Her children's book illustrations for the "Little Girl in Red Dress With Cat and Dog", published by Viking, received widespread critical acclaim. She also contributed an illustration to Steven Spielberg's Starbright Foundation's book/audio benefit project, "Once Upon A Fairytale" which was released in December of 2001 by Viking (in which her work is paired with a story by Martha Stewart). "They Called Her Molly Pitcher", written by Anne Rockwell and illustrated by von Buhler, was published by Knopf & Crown/Random House in May 2002. It received a starred review in Publisher's Weekly and a glowing review in the New York Times Review of Books and was chosen by The New York Public Library as one of the top 100 books of the year (2002). "The Cat Who Wouldn't Come Inside," von Buhler's latest picture book, written and illustrated by Von Buhler, will be released by Houghton Mifflin in Fall 2006. Von Buhler has also illustrated dozens of young adult book covers for Houghton Mifflin and other publishers.
Von Buhler has won the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at the Society of Illustrators Los Angeles and the Gold Medal from the Visual Club, as well as awards from Society of Illustrators New York City, Communication Arts, Dimensional Illustrators, and American Illustration.
